We present to you food using the finest British ingredients, most of them sourced from Devon itself: lamb and beef from Dartmoor and Totnes just a few miles away; fresh fish from the dayboats at Brixham; mussels from Exmouth; chicken and duck from Crediton; milk and cream from the Dunn’s Dairy on Dartmoor, salad leaves and herbs from our own garden…….. well, the list is endless. And whilst we are justly proud of our AA Rosette Award for fine food and service, we think our own guests are probably the best judges of the Sampsons Farm dining experience. Our chefs take their work very seriously. The air of thoughtful concentration in the kitchen can be quite scary sometimes! The world famous Ashburton Cookery School (voted no1 in the UK) sometimes send their students to us for a day or two’s experience of what it’s like to work in a restaurant kitchen steeped in skill and tradition. (Some people come to do the watercolour holidays here purely because the food is so good!)

Let’s tell you what it’s like, to come and eat at Sampsons… On arrival you’ll be welcomed into the beautiful beamed sitting room of the 15thC thatched farmhouse. With a log fire crackling in the deep fireplace, and the firelight playing on the ancient black oak panelled walls, you’ll sink back into some gloriously squashy sofas or a traditional country Love-Seat and be served drinks as you peruse the menu. It could take quite a while to make a choice, it’s all so good…. This place is a bastion of Slow Food: we cook everything from scratch here, so you can sit back and relax over a good bottle of wine as your food is prepared. You’ll then be shown to your table in one of our two intimate restaurant rooms, softly lit and with the relaxed ambience of an old and truly charming house. Our discreet English staff are well trained, courteous and attentive: as people who like to dine out ourselves, we find it tiring to be rushed; pushed to buy extras; ignored, or treated negligently, so we train our staff to the high standards we think you would expect, too. After your meal you’ll be invited back to the sitting room to take coffee and delicious little home made treats from the kitchen: these could be chocolate truffles ( Sarah, Nigel’s wife likes to steal these, they are so good,) crumbly cubes of Double Cream Devon Fudge or chocolate covered coffee beans.

You can choose from our A la Carte menu on any evening. and there is always a vegetarian option, but we are happy to make any vegetarian dish you may wish with prior notice

Please note, our restaurant is shut on Sundays We can still offer morning coffees and Cream Teas.
